Chapter Thirty

TYNAN

We tore our way into Casmir’s domain, but this isn’t the way it’s supposed to go.

“Aviella, no!”

Casmir agrees and the binding takes hold with a flash of magic. Damn it. She can’t have known what he did. He’s tricked her into a binding contract.

We can’t break that, Shen thinks across our connection.

I’m not a fool, I return. We have to try.

“Casmir,” I growl, moving closer until I’m only inches from him.

The burning rage is molten in my core. In all our existence the one thing I’ve never considered is the destruction of one of my brothers. We’ve made each other angry, infuriated, harmed one another yes. But never, not once, have I contemplated giving one of them final death.

Until now.

“Tynan, it is done,” he says, a smug look on his face.

He’s won and he knows it. Of the four of us he’s the only one that matches me in raw power. He rarely shows it. That’s never been his way, but it doesn’t change the fact.

“Do not do this,” I say.

“Tynan, it’s fine,” Aviella interjects but I ignore her.

“Let her go. There is more at stake than you can imagine.”

“Such as?” he asks, curiosity dancing on his face. “This is the ultimate experiment. How can I not watch how it plays out?”

“This is not one of your damnable experiments!” I roar, hands balling into fists.

Magic pools around both of my hands and Alaric and Shen pull power onto themselves as well. Distantly I hear men screaming and a monster roar. It’s of little consequence to me right now. I have eyes only for Casmir.

“Casmir, save them, or our deal is off,” Aviella yells.

Casmir’s eyes flicker to one side and then he motions with a hand.

“Isn’t it?” he says, his voice barely a whisper.

“Your meddling has stopped this twice now, would you interfere a third time?” I ask.

“Meddling?” he asks. “They had free will. I did nothing to their ability to choose. The choice is theirs, always has been.”

“You know what you’ve done!” I yell. “What we’ve done!”

“Yes,” he agrees. “I do know. How is the Leviathan?”

Rage blinds me and I swing. My fist smashes into his face, his glasses fly, and blood spurts from his mouth and nose as his head jerks to one side. He looks back at me and smiles, blood dripping from the corner of his mouth.

“Damn you,” I say.

“You see,” he says, looking to Aviella. “This. This is my brother. Uncontrolled rage and violence. A dog that needs a watcher, someone to tell him where to attack. It’s the only purpose he has in life, you see. He fulfills it well. Death, that is his gift.

“When the Divine marked you, it chose well. You truly are the Horseman of War.”

Memories from eons ago flash through my mind and they stoke the anger higher. Remembering when I was named out, when each of us was marked to fulfill our roles in the coming Apocalypses. A role we’ve only broken free of this time.

“We have one chance,” I say.
